    Employing severely disabled people in Germany: the levy

    From 20 workplaces on, 5 per cent must be filled by severely disabled people; for each unfilled mandatory place a monthly levy of between 155 and 815 euros has applied since 2025, paid to the Integrationsamt by 31 March. The first module counts workplaces and credits and works through the levy. The second sets out the duties inside the business: checking every vacancy, disability-appropriate employment, the disabled employees' representative and five days of additional leave.

    From 20 jobs, 5 percent must be held by severely disabled people — one place below 40 jobs, two below 60. Each unfilled compulsory place costs EUR 155, 275, 405 or 815 a month, depending on the employment rate actually reached.

    Severely disabled employees get an extra working week of leave: five days on a five-day week, four on four, six on six. If the status did not cover the whole year, they get one twelfth per full month.

    Where a severely disabled employee's participation in working life meets particular difficulties, the employment agency may count them towards two or three mandatory workplaces (§ 159 SGB IX) — fewer unfilled workplaces, less compensatory levy.
