Calculation assumptions

  • The price of the buy-back is ENTERED, never computed here: it depends on the option chosen, on your age and on your income over the last twelve months, and its scale is set by an annual order this calculator cannot read. Take the figure from the Assurance retraite's official simulator before filling the field. The only exception is a buy-back of an internship period, whose price per quarter is stated on the official fact sheet and applied automatically.
  • Only the basic state pension (régime général) is computed. The Agirc-Arrco supplementary pension is not included: it is bought back separately, in points, so the real payoff may exceed the one shown here. All amounts are gross, before social levies and income tax on the pension.
  • Quarters bought back count only up to the number still missing to reach the required insurance duration. Beyond that they no longer raise the basic pension and open no surcote: a surcote requires quarters actually worked after the legal retirement age.
  • The tax saving is estimated at a constant marginal rate, on a payment assumed to be settled in one go within the year: payment × marginal rate. A payment spread over several years produces a deduction spread the same way, charged at each year's marginal rate; a large payment may straddle two brackets, and the part falling into the lower one saves less.
  • The break-even point compares the net cost with a constant annual gain, in gross euros, with no pension revaluation, no discounting and no life expectancy. Since the cost is net of tax while the gain is gross, before social levies and income tax on the pension, the real break-even point is later than the one shown. For higher-education years and incomplete years, when payment is spread over more than one year the outstanding balance is increased each year in line with the forecast consumer price index excluding tobacco: that increase is not included in the cost shown. The break-even point says after how many years of pension the payment is recovered, not whether it should be made.
  • Eligibility is not checked: age conditions, which periods may be bought back, the competent fund, the filing deadline for internships, and the requirement not to have already claimed your pension. Only your fund can say whether the buy-back is admissible, and for how many quarters.
  • Quarters validated through a buy-back are not taken into account when assessing entitlement to early retirement. A buy-back changes the amount of the pension, never the date on which it may start.
