Worked example
An extra month for nine months of work
The example on the INPS page: a worker hired on 1 April, earning €600 a month, works until 31 December. The thirteenth-month payment is €600 multiplied by the 9 months worked and divided by 12, which comes to €450.
Worked example
What one day of holiday is worth on hourly pay
A cleaner works 12 hours a week at €8 an hour. Twelve times 4.333 gives 52 hours a month; 52 divided by 26 gives 2 hours. Each day of holiday must be paid as 2 hours, that is €16. The employer keeps paying contributions during the holiday period.
Worked example
The yearly severance share according to INPS
For periods from 1990 onwards the INPS page divides the annual wage by 13.5. With €900 a month over 13 monthly payments the year's pay is €11,700; divided by 13.5 it gives a share of €866.67, which is then revalued year by year using the index INPS indicates.
Practical case
The cleaner hired in May
Paola hires a cleaner from 1 May for 18 hours a week, at a monthly wage of €800. At the end of the year she has to pay the thirteenth-month payment. The following February she decides to dismiss her. How much is December's extra month worth, and how many days of notice does Paola owe?
Hint: Count the months worked from May to December; for the notice, look at the weekly hours and at the length of service, which is under two years.
Show the solution
From May to December the cleaner worked 8 months. The extra month is 800 × 8 / 12 = €533.33. For the notice: 18 hours a week does not exceed 24, and in February the length of service is under two years. The INPS table gives 8 calendar days. If Paola does not give that notice, she owes the pay for those 8 days instead.
Answer: €533.33 of extra month and 8 days of notice
