Italian voluntary correction of a late tax payment (ravvedimento operoso)

If you pay late on your own initiative, you pay the tax, interest at the statutory rate and a reduced penalty: for breaches from 1 September 2024, the base penalty of 12.5% (25% beyond 90 days; up to 15 days late, one fifteenth of 12.5% for each day) is cut to 1/10 within 30 days of the due date, 1/9 within 90 days and 1/8 within a year.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • Both the due date and the payment fall in 2026: interest uses the 2026 statutory rate. A delay spanning two years needs each year's rate.
  • A missed or late payment only, committed from 1 September 2024: penalties for return errors and the combined-penalty rule are not calculated.
  • Reduction bands are counted in days from the due date, as in the Revenue Agency's table. For taxes with a periodic return, the law ties the 1/9 and 1/8 bands to the return deadlines: check your own case.
  • No draft assessment notice and no inspection report have been served: the smaller reductions tied to those steps are not applied.
