German interest on tax arrears — 0.15 per cent per full month
Here only FULL months count — "months begun are disregarded" — and that is the OPPOSITE of ss. 240 and 152, where a single day triggers a whole month. Three provisions of the same statute, two ways of counting.

Calculation assumptions
- Arrears only: interest in the taxpayer's favour follows s. 233a(3) sentences 3 and 4 and depends on the DATE OF PAYMENT, not on a count of months.
- The rate applied is the one in force from 1 January 2019. For interest periods spanning the change of rate, s. 238(1b) requires them to be split.
- The difference under s. 233a(3) has already been determined: this calculator does not itself deduct prepayments or withholding. Where the tax assessment is amended, s. 233a(5) sentence 2 AO makes the "difference between the tax assessed and the tax previously assessed, each reduced by creditable withholding and creditable corporation tax" decisive: enter only that additional amount. Not modelled: s. 233a(5) sentence 3 — "interest previously to be fixed" is to be added to the interest so calculated; this calculator only computes interest on the difference entered.
- The grace period follows the tax period selected: from 2025, s. 233a(2) AO (15 months, 23 months where agricultural and forestry income predominates); for 2019 to 2024, Art. 97 s. 36 EGAO. For 2019 the interest period starts on 1 October 2021 (21 full months after the year end), and in the cases of s. 233a(2) sentence 2 on 1 May 2022 (28 months). The 15 months become 21 months for 2020 and 2021, 20 months for 2022, 18 months for 2023 and 17 months for 2024; the 23 months become 29, 28, 26 and 25 months. Tax periods before 2019 are not offered: their interest period may span the change of rate under s. 238(1b).
- Not modelled: s. 233a(8) AO. Interest on arrears is either not fixed or remitted to the extent that payments or other contributions were made towards a tax assessment that became effective later, and the tax office accepted them and credited them against the tax assessed and payable. This calculator does not take such payments into account: it calculates as if nothing had been paid before the assessment became effective.
- Not modelled: s. 233a(2a) AO. To the extent that the tax assessment rests on taking account of a retroactive event (s. 175(1) sentence 1 no. 2 and (2)) or on a loss deduction under s. 10d(1) EStG, the interest period begins 15 months after the end of the calendar year in which the retroactive event occurred or the loss arose — not the year in which the tax arose. This calculator always counts from the year the tax arose and, in those cases, counts too many interest months. Nor does it split the difference into partial differences with the same start of the interest period under s. 233a(7).
