Worked example
Giulia's interest
Tax of €5,000, forty days of delay in 2025 and fifty in 2026. First segment: 5,000 × 2 × 40 / 36,500 = €10.96. Second segment: 5,000 × 1.6 × 50 / 36,500 = €10.96. Total interest: €21.92. The two amounts happen to match because of the figures in this case, not because of any rule.
Practical case
A delay that runs past New Year
A craftsman owed €2,500 of tax on a December 2025 deadline and pays of his own accord in 2026: the days of delay are twenty in 2025 and fifteen in 2026. How much interest must he pay, and what reduced penalty?
Hint: Split the interest by year; the penalty is worked out on the total delay.
Show the solution
2025 interest: 2,500 × 2 × 20 / 36,500 = €2.74. 2026 interest: 2,500 × 1.6 × 15 / 36,500 = €1.64. Total interest: €4.38. The total delay is thirty-five days: base penalty 12.5 %, that is €312.50; after the thirtieth day the fraction is one ninth, so €34.72.
Answer: €4.38 of interest and €34.72 of reduced penalty
Practical case
A forgotten nil-balance F24
A company offset a credit against one month's withholding taxes, producing a nil-balance F24, but never transmitted it. It notices forty days later. What must it do to put things right, and how much must it pay?
Show the solution
It must submit the missing F24 through the Agenzia's online services, as for any nil-balance F24. The delay is longer than five working days, so the penalty is €100. Within ninety days of the omission the Agenzia reduces it to one ninth: €11.11, paid under tax code 8911.
Answer: Submit the missing F24 and pay €11.11 under code 8911
Practical case
Two payments for one debt
A consultant owes €6,000 of tax that fell due in 2026. She pays 3,000 twenty days after the deadline and the other 3,000 fifty days after it, settling the penalty for each payment on its own date. How much does she pay in all in reduced penalties and interest?
Show the solution
First payment, on day twenty: base penalty 3,000 × 12.5 % = €375.00, cut to one tenth, €37.50; interest 3,000 × 1.6 × 20 / 36,500 = €2.63. Second payment, on day fifty: same base penalty, cut to one ninth, €41.67; interest 3,000 × 1.6 × 50 / 36,500 = €6.58. Total: €79.17 of penalties and €9.21 of interest.
Answer: €79.17 of penalties and €9.21 of interest
