Worked example

Two sentences, two readings

First version: cycling is booming and demand for repairs is strong. Nothing in it can be checked. Second version, fictitious: of 250 households surveyed in the area between 1 and 20 March, 40 had a bicycle repaired by a professional in the last twelve months. The reader can argue about the sample, but knows what is being argued about.

Practical case

Reviewing Inès's draft

Inès's first draft contains five statements. A: the bicycle market is growing everywhere in France. B: two repair workshops operate in the area, noted on site on 12 March. C: customers will appreciate a quality service. D: of 250 households in the area surveyed by questionnaire from 1 to 20 March, 40 had a bicycle repaired by a professional in the last twelve months. E: we are aiming for an ambitious market share. Which ones can a reader check as written?

Hint: For each sentence, look for a source, a date and a scope. All three are needed.

Show the solution

A has no source, no date and no area: it is a general trend. C carries no figure and can be neither true nor false. E states an intention with no value. B has a source (the on-site check), a date (12 March) and a scope (the area). D has a source (the questionnaire, 250 households), a date (1 to 20 March) and a scope (the area). Only B and D can go into the forecast; A, C and E must be rewritten or removed.

Answer: B and D only
