Worked example
Luca's Spanish account
Luca kept the account he opened in Valencia as an Erasmus student. In 2025 the balance never went above 9,000 euros and the average was 3,000 euros. The peak is under 15,000 euros, so no monitoring; the average is under 5,000 euros, so no IVAFE. If Luca holds nothing else abroad, this account does not require schedule RW.
Practical case
Sara and the Munich account
Sara is resident in Turin. Throughout 2025 she held one current account with a German bank: its highest balance was 13,500 euros, and the average annual balance on her statements was 6,200 euros. She holds nothing else abroad. Does she have to complete schedule RW, or schedule W of the 730? If so, why, and for which tax?
Hint: Run the two tests separately: the account's peak decides monitoring, the average balance decides IVAFE. Then reread the last sentence of the exemption rule.
Show the solution
The highest value reached, 13,500 euros, does not exceed 15,000 euros, so on monitoring alone Sara would be exempt. The average balance, 6,200 euros, is above 5,000 euros, so IVAFE on the account is owed at the flat amount set for individuals. The exemption rule keeps the duty to complete the schedule whenever IVAFE is owed: Sara must file it, in the Redditi return or in schedule W of the 730, and pay the flat charge for the account.
Answer: Yes, to pay 34.20 euros of IVAFE
