Practical case
Which route onto the craft register?
Three journeymen want to become self-employed in 2026. Anna passed the journeyman examination as an electronics technician and then worked for seven years in an electrical firm, five of them as site manager with her own authority over staff and materials. Ben is a journeyman optician with nine years of experience, six of them as branch manager. Clara is a bespoke tailor and wants to open a studio. Who can start, and by which route?
Hint: First check which annex the trade is in, then whether section 7b applies to that craft at all.
Show the solution
Anna: electrical technicians are number 25 of Annex A, so the craft is licensed. Section 7b excludes only numbers 12 and 33 to 37, and number 25 is not among them. Anna has the journeyman examination, seven years in total rather than the six required, and five years rather than four in a senior position. She can apply for the practice authorisation and will be entered on that basis. Ben: opticians are number 33, one of the excluded crafts. Despite his long experience, section 7b does not help him; he needs the master examination, an equivalent qualification or an exceptional authorisation under section 8. Clara: bespoke tailors are in Part 1 of Annex B. She needs no entry on the Handwerksrolle but must notify the chamber of crafts of the start without undue delay.
Answer: Anna via section 7b, Ben only via the master examination, equivalence or section 8, Clara without entry but with a notification under section 18
