German partial exemption on investment funds — 30, 60 or 80% tax-free

For equity funds, 30% of income is tax-free, 60% for individuals holding the units as business assets, 80% for corporations. Mixed funds get half of that. Real-estate funds are 60% tax-free whoever holds them, foreign real-estate funds 80%.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • The fund type (equity, mixed, real estate) is an input; whether the fund meets the ratios of s. 2 of the Act is not checked here.
  • Only positive income is considered; losses and expenses, which s. 21 of the Act deals with separately, are out of scope.
  • Not a life or health insurer, pension fund or bank trading book: under s. 20(1) sentence 4 of the Act, the higher rates do not apply to them.
