German vehicle tax on electric cars — exempt until when, and what then?

Electric vehicles first registered between 18 May 2011 and 31 December 2030 are exempt for ten years, but never beyond 31 December 2035. After that they pay the weight-based tax of KraftStG s. 9(1) no. 3, reduced by 50 per cent.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • The ten years run from the day of first registration; that day counts, and the exemption ends on the day before the anniversary (Fiscal Code s. 108 with Civil Code ss. 187(2), 188(2) and (3)). The Act itself does not name the last day.
  • Covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg permissible total weight (s. 9(1) no. 3). Heavier vehicles (no. 4(a)) are not calculated.
  • Combustion vehicles converted to electric drive (s. 3d(4)) and first registrations before 18 May 2011 (s. 18(4b)) are not calculated.
  • The figure is the full annual tax once the exemption has ended; the year in which it ends is not split day by day.
