German unemployment benefit blocking period — length and lost days

Giving up a job triggers a twelve-week blocking period, cut to three or six weeks in the cases the statute lists. It does not merely postpone benefit, it shortens the entitlement — by at least a quarter after a twelve-week period.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • It is assumed that there is no good cause and that the claimant was told of the consequences; whether a blocking period arises at all is not assessed.
  • The entitlement period is entered in days, as shown on the award notice.
  • A quarter that is not a whole number of days is rounded up to the next full day — SGB III s. 148 does not settle this rounding in terms.
  • Excludes the lapse of the entitlement under SGB III s. 161 and several blocking periods triggered by the same event (s. 159(2)).
