German co-payment cap — 2% or 1% of household income

In any calendar year you pay co-payments only up to the cap: 2% of the household's gross income for living costs, 1% for the chronically ill. Income is first reduced by allowances for relatives and children.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • Income is entered as the total of the shared household (insured person, spouse or civil partner, children), as SGB V s. 62(2) sentence 1 requires.
  • For each child the amount of the allowances under EStG s. 32(6) sentences 1 and 2 is deducted — the doubled amount, taken from the child allowance calculator.
  • Not covered: recipients of social assistance or citizen's income, for whom only the standard rate counts as income (SGB V s. 62(2) sentences 5 and 6).
