Earning on German citizen's income (Bürgergeld) — allowances under SGB II s. 11b

The first EUR 100 is exempt. You keep 20 percent of the part between EUR 100 and 520, 30 percent between EUR 520 and 1,000, and 10 percent between EUR 1,000 and 1,200 — up to EUR 1,500 with a minor child. The rest reduces your Bürgergeld.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • The earnings-allowance bands are applied to gross pay; the statute only says 'monthly income from employment', and applying it to gross pay follows usual administrative practice.
  • The basic allowance is taken as the flat EUR 100; higher proven insurance, pension or work expenses are not calculated.
  • Excludes the special rules for young people in training, volunteers and pupils (SGB II s. 11b(2b)), maintenance deductions and self-employed income.
