German maintenance advance in 2026 — minimum maintenance less full child benefit

The advance equals the minimum maintenance for the age band, reduced by the full child benefit for a first child. Up to the twelfth birthday there is no further condition; from twelve to eighteen it is paid only if the child is not on Bürgergeld or the caring parent earns at least EUR 600 a month.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • The child lives with a parent who is single, widowed, divorced or permanently separated, and receives no maintenance, or no regular maintenance, from the other parent at the level of the advance.
  • The figure is for a full month; where the conditions are met for only part of a month, the advance is paid pro rata (s. 2(1), sentence 3 UVG).
  • From twelve, the right can also exist if the advance avoids the child needing SGB II benefits; that job centre test is not modelled here.
  • The child's own income is entered already reduced by one twelfth of the employee lump sum and, for apprentices, by EUR 100.
