German duty-free allowances for travellers — what can you bring in?

From non-EU countries, goods up to EUR 300 stay free of import charges, EUR 430 for air and sea passengers, EUR 175 under 15. On top come 200 cigarettes, 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres up to 22% vol., 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer — tobacco and alcohol only from age 17.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • The allowances cover goods in personal luggage from a non-EU country or territory, for personal use or as gifts. Travel within the EU is not calculated.
  • The value of an item may not be split. If no single item exceeds the limit on its own, the figure shown is a minimum: exactly which items become dutiable depends on how they are combined.
  • Fuel, medicines for personal needs and temporarily imported luggage are not covered; they do not count towards the value limit.
  • The result is the value of goods above the allowance — not the customs duty, import VAT and excise that would be charged on it.
  • In the special case of s. 3, no more than EUR 30 of the EUR 90 may be everyday food, and the exemption applies only once a day; neither is checked.
