German family health cover — income and age limits

A family member stays covered while their regular total income does not exceed one seventh of the monthly reference amount; for a minijob the marginal-employment limit applies instead. Children are also covered only up to 18, up to 23 if not working, and up to 25 while in education or training.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • Only income and age are tested. Residence in Germany, no insurance of one's own and no self-employment as the main occupation are assumed. Not tested for spouses and civil partners: exclusion during maternity protection and parental leave, and when drawing a partial old-age pension, if they were not in statutory health insurance beforehand (SGB V s. 10(1)).
  • The marginal-employment limit is an input: it follows the minimum wage and is not held here as a constant.
  • Not covered: children with disabilities, who have no age limit, and extensions for periods of service (SGB V s. 10(2) nos. 3 and 4).
