Italian pension fund contributions: tax deduction

Contributions to a supplementary pension scheme — yours and your employer's — come off your total income up to EUR 5,300 a year from tax year 2026 (the cap was EUR 5,164.57 before). Severance pay (TFR) paid into the fund does not count towards the cap. What you save depends on your tax band: each euro deducted is worth 23%, 33% or 43% of gross IRPEF.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • Cap from article 8(4) of Legislative Decree 252/2005, raised to EUR 5,300 from tax year 2026 by the 2026 Budget Law (Law 199/2025), whose changes apply from 1 July 2026: the calculator applies the new cap to the whole of 2026.
  • What counts is contributions paid by you and by your employer or client; accruing severance pay (TFR) paid into the fund is a separate source of funding and stays outside the cap.
  • The saving is the difference in gross IRPEF at 2026 rates, worked out on the taxable income you enter before this deduction. It ignores regional and municipal surtaxes and any effect on tax credits.
  • Not covered: the higher deduction for people in their first job, contributions paid for dependants (which share the same cap), and the tax on the pension benefits themselves.
