German health and care insurance: contributions, sick pay
14.6 per cent is in the statute, the additional contribution in the fund's articles, and the 3.4 per cent for long-term care has not applied since 2025: an ordinance set 3.6 per cent. The first module sorts out the rates, the childless surcharge, deductions from the second child, the split between business and employee and the 2026 thresholds. The second calculates sickness benefit at 70 per cent of gross and no more than 90 per cent of net, limits it to 78 weeks in three years and shows what the self-employed pay differently.

Figures are tied to dated, sourced tax constants. A module whose rules have changed is flagged for review, and is unpublished automatically beyond 90 days.
By the end of this course, you can…
These outcomes are the modules' own: the promise cannot say anything the course does not teach.
- distinguish the general, the reduced and the fund-specific contribution rate of health insurance
- determine how contributions are split between employer and employee
- work out the long-term care insurance rate from age and number of children
- tell the contribution ceiling from the compulsory insurance threshold and put a 2026 figure on each
- determine when the sickness benefit entitlement starts and how it joins continued pay
- calculate sickness benefit from regular earnings and the net cap
- apply the maximum duration and the grounds for suspension
- explain the sickness benefit election and the contribution base of a voluntarily insured self-employed person
