German deduction for maintenance payments (EStG s. 33a(1))

The order decides the outcome: first raise the cap by the insurance contributions, then apportion by twelfths and round up, and ONLY THEN set off the dependant's own income. Setting off first gives too low a figure.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • It is assumed that NOBODY is entitled to child benefit or the s. 32(6) allowance for the dependant (s. 33a(1) sentence 4). Where such an entitlement exists, the training allowance of subsection 2 applies instead.
  • Cash payments are deductible only if TRANSFERRED to the dependant's account (sentence 12). Cash handed over is disregarded however well documented.
  • Enter only the income of the months in which the conditions were met: income of the other months does not reduce the apportioned cap (subsection 3 sentence 2).
