Italian take-home pay — from gross to net salary

From gross to net: take the employee's social security contributions off gross salary; charge IRPEF on the rest by bracket (23, 33 and 43 %) and subtract the employment tax credit; then take off the regional and municipal surcharges and add any tax-free tax-wedge payment.

Sources and assumptions

Calculation assumptions

  • You enter the employee contribution rate as it appears on your payslip: it depends on the pension fund, the sector and pay level, and this tool does not estimate it.
  • The salary is the only income: taxable income is gross salary less contributions, with no deductible expenses or other income.
  • The tax-wedge tax-free sum and extra credit, like any other credits, are amounts you enter yourself (for example from the dedicated calculators); the supplementary payment (trattamento integrativo) is not calculated.
  • Surcharges are attached to the year the income is earned, as on the tax return, even though payroll withholds them the following year.
