PEA withdrawal tax calculator

Before 5 years, a withdrawal closes the plan and the whole net gain is taxed at the flat rate plus social levies; after 5 years the gain is exempt from income tax but the gain share included in the withdrawal still bears social levies, and a partial withdrawal no longer closes the plan.

Calculation assumptions

  • Exceptions to closure and to taxation of an early withdrawal are not modelled: dismissal, category 2 or 3 disability, early retirement of the holder or their spouse, withdrawal of securities of a company in liquidation, withdrawal reinvested within 3 months to create or take over a business, death of the holder. The calculation applies the general case.
  • Income from unlisted securities held in the plan is exempt only up to 10% of the amount of those investments; above that it is taxed at the flat rate even without any withdrawal. This annual taxation is not calculated here.
  • Social levies are applied at the current rate on the whole gain. Historic CSG rates may apply to gains or payments predating the 2018 reform: they are not modelled, and only your financial institution knows them plan by plan.
  • For a withdrawal before 5 years, the calculation applies flat-rate taxation. The option for global taxation under the progressive income tax scale, elected in the tax return and then applying to all your investment income, is not modelled.
  • The calculation assumes no partial withdrawal preceded this one. After an earlier withdrawal, the share of payments already used is excluded from the total payments to enter.
  • The cap is checked on the entered plan alone. The combined cap for a holder of both a classic PEA and a PEA-PME, and the specific cap of a PEA held by an adult attached to their parents' tax household, are not checked.
  • A loss is quantified but never valued as a tax saving: it can be offset against gains of the same nature only after the plan is closed and all securities sold, in the year of closure and the ten following years.
  • Exit as a life annuity, available after 5 years, is not calculated. That annuity is exempt from income tax but subject to social levies.
