Italian Tobin tax on shares — work out the financial transaction tax
Anyone buying shares in Italian-resident companies pays the financial transaction tax: from 2026, 0.4% of the transaction value off-market and 0.2% when the purchase is made on a stock exchange or multilateral trading facility. Buying 10,000 euros of shares on the exchange costs 20 euros. Listed shares of companies whose average November market capitalisation in the previous year was below 500 million euros are left out, as are transfers by inheritance or gift.

Calculation assumptions
- Transfers of shares and equity-like instruments issued by companies resident in Italy. Issues, cancellations, conversions into newly issued shares and securities lending are not calculated.
- The transaction value is the net balance of trades in the same security settled on the same day, or the price paid: you enter it yourself.
- The fixed-amount tax on derivatives and the tax on high-frequency trading are not calculated.
- The calculation does not apply the exemptions tied to who is trading: intermediaries standing between the parties, counterparties such as the European Union, the ECB or central banks, market-making or liquidity provision for the issuer, social security bodies, pension funds and PEPPs, intra-group or reorganisation transactions, ethical products. If one of these applies to you, the tax shown is not due.
